Crisis in Germany: how to take a stand in 2026?
For a long time, Germany represented an almost automatic promise: to do good studies, join a solid company, progress over time and build a stable life.
In 2026, this trajectory has not disappeared. But it is no longer guaranteed.
The industry is transforming, companies are reducing costs, some recruitments are slowing, bankruptcies are increasing and uncertainty is weighing on households. In July 2026, Germany had just over3 million people unemployed, with a rate of6.4%. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit also indicates that labour demand remains low and that the chances of exiting unemployment through a return to employment are historically poor.
At the same time,24,064 companiesfiled for bankruptcy in 2025, or10.3%more than in 2024.*(Sources: Bundesagentur für Arbeit, Destatis.)*
It would therefore be dishonest to pretend that "everything is fine". But it would be just as dangerous to conclude that there is nothing more to build.
> A crisis does not eliminate all opportunities. It changes their location, shape, and the skills needed to grasp them.
So the real question is not only:“When will the crisis end?”
The real question is:“How do I position myself while she redesigns the rules of the game?”
A crisis does not reward optimism. It rewards preparation.
A crisis does not distribute gifts, it redistributes cards
Saying that a crisis is an opportunity can become an empty, even insulting formula for those who lose their jobs, businesses or savings.
Not all crises create winners. And no one becomes an investor, entrepreneur, or executive just because the economy slows down.
On the other hand, periods of instability cause three major phenomena:
In other words, a crisis does not distribute gifts. She redistributes the cards.
Those with liquidity, relevant skills, reliable information, a strong network and a capacity for execution can then take positions that the majority do not yet see, or are no longer able to take.
Microsoft was founded in 1975, in the midst of a period of recession and oil shock. Airbnb officially launched its service in 2008, during the Great Financial Crisis, with two very concrete needs: to enable individuals to generate additional income and to offer guests a more accessible solution.
These companies have not succeeded thanks to the crisis in the magical sense of the word. They identified a profound change at a time when the old models were showing their limits.*(Sources: Microsoft, Airbnb.)*
The lesson is not:“Start a business during a crisis and you'll get rich.”
The lesson is more demanding: big transformations open up spaces for those who know how to solve the new problems they create.
1. In the labour market: no longer confusing diploma, employability and security
In a tense economy, a degree remains valuable, but it is no longer a career strategy on its own.
Companies recruit less by abstract potential and more to solve specific problems. They are looking for people who can increase an income, reduce a cost, automate a process, secure an activity, lead a transformation or manage expertise that has become rare.
For the diaspora, this imposes a change of posture: no longer just asking“Which position fits my degree?”but also,“What important problem am I able to solve?”
A period of slowdown can become a good time to:
The bad reflex would be to multiply training without strategy. Accumulating certificates does not protect against a crisis if the market still does not understand what you know how to produce.
> In difficult times, the visibility of your value matters almost as much as your value itself.
2. In entrepreneurship: starting from a problem, not from a desire to flee employment
The weakness of the labour market can push towards entrepreneurship. But starting a business just because you can't find a job is a fragile foundation. Frustration is not yet an economic model.
The right approach is to observe what the crisis makes more urgent:
The figures also show that the entrepreneurial initiative is progressing despite the context. According to theKfW-Gründungsmonitor 2026 aprox690,000 peopleestablished business in Germany in 2025, up from 585,000 a year earlier.
More than two-thirds did so as a secondary activity. In addition,34%of creators had a migratory history and44%of creations were based on a digital offer.*(Source: KfW Research.)*
This data sends a clear message: entrepreneurship does not necessarily mean quitting tomorrow morning, raising millions or taking an uncontrolled risk.
You can start with a simple offer, test with real customers, keep your job, measure demand and invest gradually.
> Side business is not a small shameful business: it can be a controlled risk laboratory.
It is also necessary to normalize another trajectory after studies. Entering a large company remains a valid option, but it is not the only proof of success.
Taking over an SME, launching a service, creating a digital product, being self-employed or building an activity between Germany and an African country can also constitute real professional trajectories, provided they are prepared with method.
3. In real estate: negotiation comes back, but a price drop doesn't turn a bad good into a good deal
When financing becomes more expensive, some of the buyers disappear from the market. Some homeowners need to sell faster. Poorly positioned assets stay online longer.
This can restore bargaining power to the prepared buyer.
But we must avoid a common mistake: believing that“crisis” automatically means “cheap real estate”	protection caps (if present).
After their correction, German residential prices started to rise again in 2025. They were up by3%over one year in the fourth quarter. However, the realities remain very different depending on the city, the district, the condition of the building and energy performance.*[Source: destatis]*
The opportunity therefore does not lie in the simple fact of buying. It lies in the ability to:
An urgent sale can create a discount. A poor energy class can open up a margin for negotiation. An over-indebted homeowner may accept a lower offer. An estate or vacant property can create a special situation.
But none of these circumstances replace analysis.
> Profit prepares for purchase; risk often appears after signing.
4. On the stock market: profiting from declines does not mean guessing the lowest point
When markets go down, assets can become cheaper. But to buy only because a price has fallen is to confuse lower price with real value.
For a long-term investor, a crisis can be an opportunity to continue or gradually increase its diversified investments, provided that it has precautionary savings, does not need this money in the short term and understands the risk taken.
Regular investment makes it possible to buy more shares when prices go down and less when they go up. It reduces the temptation to look for the perfect moment, which even professionals rarely identify consistently.
Investor protection authorities also recall that leaving the market completely after a decline can crystallize losses and miss the rebound.*(Source: Investor.gov, Diversification Guide.)*
The serious strategy is therefore not"buy everything that goes down"It involves:
Volatility can create a better entry point. It can also quickly destroy the capital of an impatient, focused or ill-informed person.
5. In skills: when companies cut, they also reveal what becomes essential
A crisis acts as a test of priority. Secondary projects are suspended; skills directly related to the survival and transformation of the organization are gaining importance.
Today, several needs cross the German economy: automation, data and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cost control, energy, health, aging, more flexible industry, sales, restructuring and development of new markets.
For an employee, student or job seeker, the right strategy is not to follow every trend. It consists of crossing three dimensions:
The diaspora here has an often under-exploited advantage: multiple languages, multiple cultures, transnational networks and a direct understanding of needs located between different markets.
This benefit only generates value when it is transformed into a service, expertise, commercial access or connection capability.
6. The return to the country: build an option, not organize a flight
When Europe slows down, the question of returning to Africa comes up naturally. She deserves more than an emotional reaction.
Returning can be a powerful strategy if you bring capital, scarce expertise, technology, a network, a way of working or access to the European market. But idealizing return would be as dangerous as idealizing Germany.
The right question isn't just:“Where will life be easier?”
It is: “In which ecosystem can my skills, network and resources create the most value?”
Between staying permanently and leaving abruptly, several models exist:
The return must be a documented project: real need, reliable partners, legal framework, governance, financing, timetable and exit scenario.
> Changing countries does not correct a weak economic model.
Positioning yourself in times of crisis: a five-decision method
In the face of uncertainty, action does not mean rushing. It means organizing your options.
1. Protect your base
Reduce costly debts, control fixed expenses, build a reserve and secure essential insurance.
Without financial margin, every decision becomes urgent, and urgent decisions are rarely the best.
2. Audit its value
Which competencies produce a measurable outcome? Which ones are becoming obsolete? What problems can you solve better today than two years ago?
3. Observe demand movements
Where does money continue to circulate? Which problems become more painful? Which populations or businesses are underserved?
4. Test before betting big
A first customer before a local. A mission before a resignation. A complete analysis before an acquisition. A regular investment before a concentrated bet.
5. Build a network before the need
The best opportunities are not always published. They circulate through trust, referrals, professional communities, and informal conversations.

Level Up in Germany 2026: taking a stand in a changing Germany
This is precisely the ambition ofLevel Up in Germany 2026, on 17 October 2026 in Frankfurt	protection caps (if present).
Not a conference to deny the crisis. Not a scene to repeat that it is enough to "believe in yourself". Not a promise of quick enrichment.
But a space to understand the new rules, confront experiences and leave with more solid decisions.
Proposed theme
> Germany is changing. What about you?
> *Career, business and investment: how to take a stand in times of crisis.*
in the programme
The current crisis can serve as an excuse to wait. It can also become the moment when you protect your base, re-evaluate your trajectory and build several options.
Those who move forward will not necessarily be the most optimistic, the most educated or the most daring.
> They will often be the best informed, the best prepared and the most capable of acting methodically.
